The amount of repair for deteriorated bridge decks is often difficult to assess because commonly used inspection techniques are limited, particularly in the case with asphalt wearing surfaces and stay in place bottom forms. Sonic/ultrasonic measurements can be made through asphalt surface to identify areas of weak, deteriorated, delaminated concrete. The sonic/ultrasonic method measures the deck resonant frequencies (pulse-echos) to detect delaminations and the velocity of stress waves to determine deck concrete strength values and identify area of weakened concrete due to fracturing, dilaminations and spalling.
